G4P Team | | World of Warcraft Help and Tips | | 12/16/2009 | As a new player to World of Warcraft you can become overwhelmed by all the information that is thrown at you and the information that isn’t even given to you. Addons can save you so much time off your learning stage because they do some of the work for you. The most useful addon is Quest Helper which will show you where to go and what to kill in order to complete your quest saving you time and getting you money much quicker. When you sign up for World of Warcraft you get tons of information guiding you through the game. At first glance you will be extremely overwhelmed and won’t know where to start. Also there is a lot of information that isn’t given to you directly and you will be missing out on very important information. However, I have a few World of Warcraft tips and secrets that will get you on your way to becoming the next level 80 World of Warcraft phenomenon. The final World of Warcraft tip and secret is to get Addons.
The first World of Warcraft tip and secret is that you should level your character to level 10 before you do anything else. This will get your character to a decent position that will allow you to do more things. Once you reach level 10 you should now pick your two professions based on what you feel is necessary. The more room you have to hold gold equals the more amount of gold you can make! If you are going to sell your items make sure you pick a reasonable price so that other members will definitely buy your product and not someone else’s. So how do you get items? World of Warcraft secret and tip number four will answer that. A very successful way to get items is from the mobs you encounter and kill throughout your journeys. When you kill them take their items that will be free of cost to you and bring them to the Auction House to sell and you will make pure profit.
| | Wowhead store now open for business | | 12/01/2009 | A tipster named James sent us a pointer to store.wowhead.com a little while ago, and as a few people have noticed since, the Wowhead store is now open for business! Here's what they're selling:
* Official Wowhead merchandise (a t-shirt, a hoodie, and a mousepad, so far - does anyone still use mousepads?) * WoW paraphernalia, like those steins, and some LapWorks and Steelseries hardware products. * Some random gaming hardware that seems to have nothing to do with WoW, like Guitar Hero for PS2, and Xbox 360 accessories. It is at a discount, though, so that's cool. * The Burning Crusade collector's edition. I guess they had some extra copies [now seems to be sold out].
One interesting feature of the store is "reward points." Every item you can buy gets you a certain number of reward points; the amount loosely correlates with price, but I couldn't determine a direct correspondence from one to the other. Basically they idea is: buy stuff, earn points, spend points on rewards. So far the rewards consist of the original WoW and the various Wowhead merchandise, and the points add up fast - as the site points out, a $30 Xbox controller nets you enough points for a copy of WoW, and almost enough for a t-shirt.
For the technically inclined, I inquired about the underlying technology of the shop. The front-end work is all in-house, and so should hold true to the beautiful Wowhead aesthetic, but the e-commerce engine is the popular open-source platform Magento.
select from www.wow.com | | Pandaren Brewmaster Figure now on sale | | 11/26/2009 |
The @warcraft twitter account has been posting a few carefully taken pictures of something the past couple days, and today it's been reveled what the object is -- a Pandaren Brewmaster Figure that you can buy from the Blizzard store. The little guy is "on sale" for $50, and there are limited quantities available. Everything is first come, first serve, so if you want one I suggest getting getting it quickly.
The figure is of Chen Stormstout, who left his Pandaren home world to find better ingredients to make his brew with. These figures are usually of pretty high quality, and by the looks of it this one is exceptionally detailed. It's also not a small figure. It's over 8 inches tall and 4 pounds in weight, which makes it quite a nice desk statue.
Should be a good collectable for this who want it!
select from www.wow.com | | Dedicated WoW search engine now in beta | | 11/16/2009 |
Mrgl-Mrgl, a new search engine dedicated to the World of Warcraft, recently launched and is now in beta. The site, named after the NPC in a murloc suit in Borean Tundra, collates search results based on relevance to WoW. There are five search category tabs: Web, Image, Video, Forums, and Items. Users can type any keyword, not necessarily related to World of Warcraft (apparently subject to abuse, as shown in the most popular keywords), and the search engine delivers results scoured from popular WoW-related sites.
Mrgl-mrgl results appear to be limited to World of Warcraft news sites, forums, and WoW-tagged videos on YouTube. We're not quite sure how important it is to have a dedicated WoW search engine in the midst of database sites such as Wowhead, wikis such as WoWwiki, and blue forum trackers, but if it manages to draw from more sources in a more organized and relevant fashion, the idea just might work. Perhaps the next time you'll need to search for something related to the game, you can just 'Mrgl it'.

Blizzard has made it a holiday tradition to release a holiday card every year (usually drawn by Samwise), but this year they're putting a little twist on it. They're running a contest asking the potential artists among you to submit your own original Blizzard-themed holiday card. Download their template, fill it up with Diablo, Starcraft, or Warcraft-related holiday art (no Lost Vikings or Rock N' Roll Racing art, apparently), submit it on the contest page before December 7th, and you can win a whole slew of prizes from Blizzard and Razer, including a mouse, keyboard, and headset, as well as a signed copy of Blizzard's 2009 holiday card from Samwise himself.

select from www.wow.com | | Opinion: World of Warcraft at work | | 11/09/2009 | Games can teach and reinforce specialized skills. Moreover, they allow players to acquire and practice those skills without damaging expensive equipment or putting anyone in danger. And Honda developed an online racing game to promote its cars. The military uses war games to train soldiers for combat and uses simulators to help foot soldiers distinguish between combatants and noncombatants in urban settings. Commercial and military pilots receive much of their initial training in simulators.
Effective games utilize many of the principles that made World of Warcraft so successful. Players participate in quests composed of challenging tasks that are satisfying to accomplish and are linked to a clear mission. Real-time feedback reflects players' progress.Games can be used to anticipate and shape the future. Jane McGonigal created a massively multiplayer forecasting game, Superstruct, for the Institute for the Future (IFTF). The game invited players to propose solutions to possible global challenges, including massive energy shortages, terrorists with biological weapons, global food supply contamination, and large numbers of refugees fleeing economic and natural disasters. Superstruct players rewarded one another with points based on things like creativity, persuasiveness and cooperation. They came up with many creative solutions during the game's six-week life span, and many of the ideas were incorporated into the IFTF's 2009 Ten-Year Forecast. Games can also help get consumers interested in products without making them feel as if they are getting a sales pitch. Disney released a free iPhone game, RhinoBall, to promote the movie Bolt. | | First The9 Lost World of Warcraft | | 11/09/2009 | In April 2009 Blizzard ended its licensing agreement with The9 to operate WoW in China choosing NetEase.com, Inc. ((ADR) NASDAQ: NTES) in its place. Glaser is looking for all shareholders who purchased American Depositary Shares (ADS’s) of The9 — between November 2006 and July 2009 — to be compensated for their financial losses due to the company’s inability to extend its license to host in China Activision Blizzard Inc.’s (NASDAQ: ATVI) World of Warcraft (WoW).
Another claim made by Glaser concerns share sales by The9’s management and other company insiders during the period covered by the suit. In some instances the lawsuit claims that The9 made assertions about the successful progress in renegotiating the license when in fact it had not even begun formal negotiations with Blizzard. The sales that are being questioned amount to US$125 million. The lawsuit lists three pages of share sales that it deems “unusual and suspicious in timing and amount” but it’s not clear to me what makes them suspicious. The suit seeks to establish the history of The9’s negotiations with Blizzard and compare it to public statements that the company issued regarding the status of those negotiations. On October 21, Lawrence Glaser, a US shareholder in The9 Limited ((ADR) NASDAQ: NCTY) filed an application to bring a class action lawsuit against the Chinese game operator and members of its senior management.
| | Win Grunty by answering 10 Escapist questions | | 10/29/2009 | As part of their Halloween celebration, the Escapist magazine is giving away twenty Grunty the Murloc Marine codes to sharp readers able to answer their 10-question quiz about the World of Warcraft's Hallow's End event. Readers, who have to register at the site (go ahead, it's free), need to get all ten questions correctly in order to be entered in a random drawing to receive one of the codes for the murloc pet. Aside from being unbearably cute and badass at the same time, the Starcraft-themed baby murloc which was given away at this year's BlizzCon also gets into a shootout with the Zergling pet. Or explodes in green goo. It depends on who gets the jump.
Fortunately for you readers, there's no need for that kind of violence. Just head on over to the Escapist Magazine and answer their fairly easy quiz (insert Headless Horseman laughter here), a multiple choice affair that doesn't have any time limit -- so it's actually kind of a giveaway. Well, a giveaway for players with a good grasp of wowhead and wowwiki the game, as it's not exactly easy. Well, it wasn't easy for me, but I'm no expert on Azerothian Holidays (I got 9/10, so I'm out of the running). If you think you've got the chops for it, though, hop on over to the Escapist and start the quiz!

Remember, however, that this is the test realm so there's a good chance the boss is undertuned and will be a bit harder come patch 3.3. Or not, Lord Marrowgar (who has less health than someone like Lord Jaraxxus) may just end up being a 'gimme' boss to ease you into progression. Either way, don't read too much into his difficulty tonight.
Even if he's not perfectly tuned yet, the testing has given us some idea of how his fight will go. His notable abilities are...
Whirlwind - Just what you would expect, a physical damage AOE. When it lands, it also applies a DoT. Lord Marrowgar will announce the ability before he uses it, so your melee will want to get out of the way so they don't get hit with the bleed. Saber Lash - Seasoned raiders will know this ability well. It's an incredibly powerful melee strike that splits its damage across three targets (on 25-man, two targets on 10-man) so you'll want all of your tanks standing together. That way, nobody gets 1-shot by it. Coldflame - A line of (cold) fire spawns, and you must not stand in it. Do not stand in the fire. Seriously, people. Bone Spike Graveyard - Lord Marrowgar throws a bone spike in a chosen direction, and anybody directly in the line of fire will be impaled. The rest of the raid will need to DPS down the spike to free impaled players. It can be avoided, and it will not hit targets being hit with Saber Lash.

| | New official Jaina and Sylvanas character bios | | 10/09/2009 |
Blizzard continues to leak out the official information about Icecrown (the raid, as you know, coming in patch 3.3), this time updating their Under Development site with official bios for Jaina Proudmoore and Sylvanas Windrunner, two ladies (one living, one not-so-much) that will likely have a large role in the fight against Arthas Menethil, better known as The Lich King.
Sylvanas, you'll remember, featured in the Lament of the Highborne video early on in Wrath, where the story of her death and resurrection at Arthas' hands made it clear she's got unfinished business with the onetime-paladin turned Lord of the Scourge. And Jaina... well, Jaina's had a front row seat to Arthas' undoing -- they were childhood friends who looked like they were headed towards being more than friends, until Arthas found a big bad sword that turned him into a big baddie. It's going to be awesome seeing all of these storylines start meeting up together in The Frozen Halls and the raid beyond -- we can't wait.
select from www.wow.com | | Patch 3.3 PTR: Icecrown to introduce new hard mode togg... | | 10/08/2009 | There'll be a new way to activate hard modes in Icecrown, according to Bornakk. After the somewhat confusing four modes for the same instance that was introduced in Patch 3.2, which redefined "normal" and "heroic" for 10- and 25-man raids, Blizzard is making it easy for players to toggle hard modes for the bosses in Icecrown. The current plan is to make boss hard mode toggles part of the UI rather than through game mechanics such as in Ulduar. This means that players running Icecrown can switch hard modes on and off for bosses throughout the run. As Bornakk states, players "can switch it back and forth as much as you like. Encounter 1 on hard, 2 on normal, 3 on hard, 4 on normal, etc."
It's also interesting to note that Blizzard plans to scale up the Emblems found in older dungeons to Emblems of Triumph the way Emblems of Conquest are dropped in raids now. Newer, higher version emblems will drop in Icecrown, allowing advanced raiders access to the newest gear. This emblem upgrades will allow players to better catch up on gear and consequently explore Icecrown. Of course, Bornakk reminds everyone of the caveat that "Things can still change."
select from www.wow.com | | Tokyopop announces 2010 schedule for Warcraft manga | | 10/07/2009 | The line-up for 2010 has been announces. The first series from Tokyopop was the Sunwell trilogy , written by Richard Knaak and drawn expertly by Kim Jae-Hwan. It dealt with the events of the Sunwell and featured characters prominent in the game such as Kalecgos and Anveena Teague. The second series was called World of Warcraft: Legends, a recently concluded five-volume affair that uniquely told various stories of Azeroth's lesser-known folks.
For 2010, Tokyopop plans to kick off class-based stories starting with the popular Death Knight, featuring Thassarian, the first Death Knight to rejoin the Alliance. According to BlizzPlanet, this full-volume comic written by Dan Jolley and drawn by Rocio Zucchi is slated for December 2010 although they probably mean this coming December, 2009. This will be followed by World of Warcraft: Mage, written by Richard Knaak and drawn by an as-yet-unrevealed artist, which will be available on June 7, 2010.
The most curious of the three volumes is World of Warcraft: Shaman, which is due for a "late 2010" release. Blizzard works closely with Tokyopop for all its manga, and all the stories are considered canon (Trag Highmountain even made it into the game). The Shaman book is rumored to be Cataclysm-related, although it's a good bet that the game's third expansion will be out by late 2010.

G4P Team | | No Wolpertinger and Pink Elekk quests for Europe | | 09/23/2009 |
Blizzard has confirmed that the absence of the Catch the Wild Wolpertinger and Pink Elekks on Parade quests on European realms is not a bug. These "get drunk and see creatures" quests were removed to comply with "regional game rating requirements". We can surmise from this that at least one of the European countries is unwilling to allow virtual inebriation in a game partially targeted to teenagers.
We usually think that the U.S. is more prudish about these kinds of non-violent topics than Europe, but obviously that is not the case here. Personally, I think these quests are pretty innocuous and the near blindness you get when you get hammered in-game isn't exactly encouraging young drunkenness. But I do see how some would disagree with me.
We are researching this, but in the meantime, do you know which region(s) are causing the removal of these Brewfest quests from Europe?
